The firmness of your skin depends on two building blocks

The skin is the largest organ of your body. You wear it all your life and it protects you from sunburn, cold – simply from external influences. You should therefore pay special attention to it, especially if you are losing a lot of weight, during and after which it needs the right care. Your skin consists of several layers. These are the epidermis, the dermis, and the subcutis. The uppermost layer is exposed to external influences around the clock and must be renewed. The layer underneath with its connective tissue ensures that the skin is firm and at the same time elastic. The innermost layer, also known as the subcutaneous fatty tissue, stores both nutrients and heat and serves as a cushion.

Skin flaps are slack tissue structures that need to be treated. The two proteins, collagen, and elastin are crucial here, as they are building blocks of connective tissue. They give our skin the necessary support. When it comes to regeneration, we should therefore rely on creams with these ingredients or vitamin C, zinc, and green tea, for example.

We should definitely consider this after the diet, but also before as a preventive measure. It is important to make sure that you do not go on a radical diet while you are losing weight, but that you prepare and work on your body at an appropriate speed. The healthier and more consciously you lose weight, the better you can avoid the development of skin flaps. But we also have tips on what you can do if it is already too late for that.

Targeted training of the skin flaps

Skin flaps, especially the fat apron, you will usually always get after a significant weight loss. The circumference of your abdomen is greatly reduced and the skin is no longer needed. Unfortunately, the abdominal fat does not only from above but also below the abdominal wall. If you now experience a strong reduction of your abdominal fat, the result is that not only the skin but also your muscle corset around the abdomen becomes very slack.

Gymnastics and muscle training not only help you lose weight but also with your loose skin after weight loss. With very specific training you can achieve a significant reduction and tighten of the skin flaps. In addition, you should also make sure you eat a healthy and balanced diet. However, it should also be mentioned that such success always depends on the condition of the respective connective tissue and the size of the skin flaps.

Tightening the skin after weight loss – if no training helps
If your skin flaps are too large because you have simply lost a lot of weight, the chances of eliminating this only through exercise and a balanced diet are rather slim. This can cause psychological stress.

However, to prevent this from happening, you should also think about a possible operation such as an abdominoplasty. There are various methods, the use of which depends on the extent of your skin flaps on the abdomen. As a rule, however, all methods take place under general anesthesia. We have summarized the methods for you at a glance:

  • Total abdominoplasty
    Total abdominoplasty, i.e. a complete tightening of the abdominal wall, is an option for most patients. With this technique, it is possible to remove very large skin flaps. You can also have a sagging abdominal musculature tightened in this way.
  • Partial abdominoplasty
    Smaller flaps of skin, usually only affecting the lower abdominal area, are removed with this minimal abdominoplasty. However, the abdominal flaps can only be tightened up to the level of the navel with this method.
  • Lower and upper body lift
    If you are not only affected by skin flaps on the abdomen, i.e. a fat apron, an upper or lower body lift is a possibility. This is a very good method to tighten skin flaps in several areas of your body. With this method, several tightening operations are performed at the same time. In one operation, you can have skin flaps on your hips, stomach, thighs, buttocks, chest, upper arms, or back tightened.

Under certain circumstances, it is possible that your health insurance company may also cover the costs of these methods of tightening skin flaps. This is always the case if there is a medical indication. If physical or psychological limitations or other health problems occur due to the abdominal flaps, you should contact your doctor and your health insurance company.
