Whether straight hair, wild waves, split ends or greasy scalp – hair is washed as if they were all the same. But proper hair washing must be learned!

We all know this: You stand in the drugstore and ask yourself which shampoo to use. As soon as you get home, the next questions are waiting for you: How often should you wash your hair at all? What can you expect from your hair styling? And how often should you color your hair? All these questions are based on the same uncertainty. Once we know what our hair needs to be healthy, powerful and beautiful, the questions will solve themselves. The answer depends on the individual hair type and styling habits.

How often should I wash my hair?

Surely your hairdresser has already warned you about washing your hair too often. The shampoo not only removes dust and dirt that has settled in the hair, but also removes the greasy sebum that our scalp produces. In the process, the hair inevitably loses its natural moisture. Too frequent washing therefore makes the hair brittle.

But how often you should wash your hair depends on various factors, as we will see in a moment.

IF YOU HAVE AN OILY SCALP, YOU SHOULD WASH YOUR HAIR DAILY

If you have an oily scalp, there is almost no getting around daily washing if you don’t want to look grubby. But luck in misfortune: This hair type easily tolerates it. The sebum produced compensates for the loss of moisture by the shampoo and the hair remains healthy and shiny.

SWEATY HAIR AFTER SPORTS

It gets trickier if you do a lot of sports. If your hair is bathed in sweat after a hard workout, a dry shampoo can initially help and save you from washing too often. You don’t have to be afraid of the smell of sweat: For this to develop, you need a permanently warm and humid climate. It does not form in the air.

WASH DRY OR WAVY HAIR 2 TO 3 TIMES A WEEK

Normal, dry or wavy hair needs an interval of two to three days between washes in order not to lose too much moisture. You can also use dry shampoo if you feel that your hair needs extra washing.

COLORED HAIR SHOULD NOT BE WASHED TOO OFTEN

If the hair is colored, even fewer hair washes are sufficient. The hair color penetrates deeply into the hair structure. This puts your hair under stress, which is why you should spare your hair additional stress by frequent hair washing to keep it permanently healthy.

THESE PRODUCT TYPES ARE SUITABLE FOR YOUR HAIR

Dermatologists recommend a combination of shampoo and conditioner. A clarifying deep cleansing product can be used weekly. The use of products for colored hair helps to preserve the color pigments longer. Alkaline environment opens the cuticle layer and it swells, so your shampoo should be pH skin neutral (5.5) or slightly acidic.

USE HOUSEHOLD REMEDIES WITH CAUTION

Be careful with tips using baking powder as a shampoo substitute. Baking powder has a relatively high pH value. Your hair can be seriously damaged. Otherwise, natural beauty treatments from aloe vera to yogurt to beer used as a mask are a good idea, but not suitable as a permanent replacement for shampoo.

WATER HARDNESS AND WATER TEMPERATURE

Hard water can give hair a dry thin texture. A clarifying shampoo or special hard water shampoos can help against this. As far as the water temperature is concerned: the cooler, the better for the hair. Lukewarm water is a good compromise for the balancing act between freezing and healthy hair.

You should avoid these five mistakes

  • The more foam, the better? The opposite is the case, it can lead to hair breakage. The best thing is to massage the shampoo into the scalp and let it turn into lather by itself, do not massage into the lengths and ends of the hair.
  • On the other hand, apply the conditioner only in the lengths and not on the scalp. Even if you are pressed for time, do not do without the conditioner or at least apply leave-in conditioner to the hair after washing.
  • Avoid hot water when washing your hair. The hair dries out, becomes frizzy and takes damage. Lukewarm or maximum body temperature is the better water temperature for hair washing.
  • If possible, do not blow-dry your hair when it is wet. The effect is the same as when using too hot water. Air drying is healthier for the hair. If there is no other way, do not blow-dry too hot and do not blow-dry too long in the same place.
  • Do not rub your hair dry, better only press out carefully. Wet hair is particularly sensitive and tends to break.
