Herpes: An annoying evil

Often a little stress is enough to cause herpes blisters to sprout on the lips: over 85 percent of all people are infected with the herpes simplex virus, but only a part of them actually develop herpes. Once the blisters have appeared, they always come back – and we would like to hide ourselves away. Fortunately, there are some home remedies for herpes that can help us get rid of the symptoms in a gentle way.

Herpes – First aid:

Herpes often announces itself by symptoms such as a slight tingling or tightness on the lip. It is now possible to take action and stop the virus from multiplying before the first blisters break out. Ice helps here: Simply wrap a cool pack in a dry tea towel and press lightly against the lip. If the bubbles are already there, the ice can unfortunately no longer help – in the worst case, the cooling will even damage the skin.

The best household remedies against herpes

Do you suffer from lip herpes? In acute cases the following home remedies can help against herpes:

  • Garlic: Garlic has an antiviral and disinfecting effect, which is why it is often used against herpes. Simply chop or press a clove of garlic and rub it on the blisters.
  • Tea Tree Oil: Tea tree oil is also generally used for skin diseases, as it has an antibacterial effect. However, it must be diluted: Tea tree oil is mixed with water in a ratio of one to three, then it can be dabbed on the herpes several times a day with a cotton swab.
  • Honey: Honey is a real all-rounder: it contains so-called antimicrobial substances, which means it can kill viruses and bacteria and prevent them from multiplying. Once herpes breaks out, you can dab some honey on the affected areas. Practical: Honey also makes the lips particularly soft.
  • Lemon balm: Lemon balm is one of the few household remedies against herpes, the effect of which has even been proven in a study. The medicinal plant contains certain active ingredients that prevent herpes viruses from penetrating the body cells. After a few days (sometimes even after a few hours) the herpes symptoms should improve.
  • Zinc ointment: Herpes becomes particularly unpleasant when the blisters burst open and wet. Zinc ointment helps here – because zinc dries out the affected area of skin and thus prevents wetting.
  • Tea: Black and green tea are said to promote healing. If you want to use tea as a home remedy against herpes, simply pour hot water over a teabag, let it cool down, and then press it lightly against the lip follicles.

What about toothpaste?

Many people swear by the use of toothpaste as a household remedy against herpes. However, critics tend to advise against using toothpaste. It contains certain irritating substances that can further damage the skin already affected by the viruses. In addition, most kinds of toothpaste do not have an effect, because this can be led back if at all only to zinc, which is contained only in some toothpaste sorts.

What do I have to consider when using home remedies against herpes?

The most important thing is not to inadvertently spread the viruses even further if you treat herpes from the outside yourself with household remedies. Therefore, it is best to use a cotton swab to apply the household remedy to the lip and throw it away after one single use. Afterward, you should also wash your hands.

And if household remedies for treatment no longer help?

In most cases, cold sores can be treated with home remedies for herpes – but not in every case. If the remedies presented do not help within two or three days, you should go to a pharmacy to find out about alternatives. Herpes patches or anti-viral creams can then help.

Can I prevent herpes?

Unfortunately, once the cold sores have broken out, you can’t get rid of them: the herpes pathogens remain in the body for the whole of your life and can cause an outbreak again and again in stressful situations, for example. However, there are a number of things you can do to minimize the number of outbreaks of lip herpes:

  • Strengthen your immune system, for example by making sure that you take in sufficient nutrients
  • Drink at least two liters of water a day
  • Sleep enough – most people need between seven and eight hours of sleep per night
  • Eat a balanced diet with lots of fruit and vegetables, fiber (for example, from whole grain products), some lean meat, lots of fish, and lean dairy products
  • Make sure you get enough exercise: At least three times a week for 30 minutes each should be in
  • Protect not only your skin but also your lips from the blazing sun with sunscreen
