It was then that scientists discovered the high value of this endogenous fatty acid, which is important for the conversion of food into energy. However, it was only in recent years that further findings came to light that brought this vitamin-like substance into the focus of research, especially when it comes to the big issue of overweight and weight loss.
For example, in addition to its role in energy production, alpha lipoic acid also has high antioxidant properties: it traps free radicals (oxidants) and thus protects the human cell from damage and aging. It is therefore frequently used in vascular diseases such as diabetes, fatty liver and overweight. Recent research has now also examined alpha lipoic acid for its effects in weight loss.

Alpha lipoic acid (ALA) is an organic compound that occurs as a co-enzyme in all human cells – more precisely, it is found in the mitochondria, the small fuel cells in our body that are responsible for generating energy. There it helps enzymes to convert nutrients into energy. For example, it boosts the utilization of carbohydrates, helps break down circulating sugar and thus promotes the body’s energy supply.
These are properties that are particularly interesting for diabetics, people who want to lose weight and athletes: For the diabetic, this results in an insulin-saving effect, the person willing to lose weight no longer stores so much sugar in the form of body fat and the athlete simply has more strength.
This acid is both fat and water soluble
Chemically speaking, alpha lipoic acid is a fatty acid that contains sulfur. This special composition makes it the only antioxidant that is both water- and fat-soluble. This enables it to enter every cell and intervene in the processes. For example, if the water-soluble vitamin C can only work in aqueous tissue forms or vitamin E only in fatty ones, the alpha lipoic acid penetrates every tissue, boosts energy production, catches free radicals and thus protects the cells.
In addition, due to its small molecular size, unlike other antioxidants, it can pass the blood-brain barrier and protect the brain cells there. At the same time, however, it can also regenerate other antioxidants such as vitamin C and encourage them to continue fighting free radicals effectively.
Positive effect of alpha lipoic acid on weight loss
Some recent studies have now shown that alpha lipoic acid can also reduce weight in various ways. For example, animal studies have shown that alpha lipoic acid can reduce the enzyme responsible for appetite and hunger in the human brain. When this happens, the calories that the body burns at rest also increase automatically. Animals administered alpha lipoic acid in a 2010 study at Beijing Agricultural University thus consumed more calories and lost weight.
In another research series in 2011, obese patients showed significant weight loss after being given alpha lipoic acid. In the Korean study, conducted at the University of Ulsan, one group of obese people each received a placebo, another 1,200 milligrams of alpha lipoic acid and the third 1,800 milligrams. In the end, the higher dose group showed a two percent greater weight loss.
Natural occurrence and dosage of alpha lipoic acid
Animal products such as red meat and internal organs like kidneys and liver are a good source of alpha lipoic acid. However, there are also plant foods such as broccoli, tomatoes, spinach and Brussels sprouts that contain the co-enzyme. At the same time, it can be found in many dietary supplements, whether capsules, powder or drops. Care should be taken to ensure that alpha lipoic acid is best taken on an empty stomach or at least two hours after the last meal. This is because the substance has the ability to bind to minerals that are ingested through a meal. This can lead to it becoming ineffective in combination. The co-enzyme is therefore much better absorbed if it is taken between meals, for example between lunch and dinner.
There are no clear statements about the dosage. However, most manufacturers recommend a daily dose of 200 milligrams. After a while, a gradual increase of the dose to 600 milligrams may be advisable until a significant improvement is felt. If you are not sure, you should definitely talk to a doctor before.
